Wherever you choose to go to college, living on campus is a huge part of the collegiate experience. James Madison University is no exception – in fact, it basically sets the standard for what campus living should be. JMU was even ranked #7 out of 1,396 college campuses by Niche.com in 2023! Its historic campus has been home to generations of Dukes, and it’s constantly being upgraded to accommodate the needs of modern-day students. If you’re looking for an amazing place to call home while you work towards one of the most esteemed diplomas in the country, you’ll definitely want to consider JMU on campus housing

About JMU On-Campus Housing

At JMU, the campus bleeds purple and gold. Everywhere you go, you’ll feel the legacy of this incredible school permeating the air. Since it first opened in 1908, JMU has been an esteemed American university with a reputation for greatness.

Today, 115 years later, JMU is an even stronger and more accommodating place to call home. As a first-year student, you’ll be required to live on campus for the entirety of the fall and spring semesters (although there are a few exceptions for specific circumstances.) JMU’s 25 residence halls are spread across the campus and are exclusively for first-year students. You’ll definitely be able to find a place to call home at JMU!

The Residence Areas on campus include The Apartments on Grace, The Bluestone Area, the Hillside Area, The Lake Area, the Skyline Area, The Village, and Greek Row. You can take a virtual tour of each of these spaces here

Additionally, you’ll have the option to join a Residential Learning Community, which gives you the option to live and learn with others who have similar interests to you. RLCs include Arts, Education, Sports & Recreation, Business, and more!

Perks of On-Campus Housing

While JMU on-campus housing is certainly beautiful, it’s the amenities and student lifestyle that truly make it an incredible experience. There is always something to do on campus at JMU, like catching a movie at the on-campus movie theater or a comedy show, Late Night Breakfasts, international events, cultural celebrations, and more.

Some schools have a reputation for horrible cafeteria food – but not JMU! They’ve been ranked in the top ten for “Best Campus Food” for over 20 years. Choose from over 25 different dining options on campus, including buffet-style offerings, a-la-carte options, convenience kiosks, food trucks, and, yes, even some popular fast-food chains.

When it comes to staying active, JMU’s University Recreation Center (or UREC) is a 278,000+ square foot state-of-the-art fitness center. You can take a group exercise class, swim in the aquatic center, run the indoor track, and even take a cooking class! They also offer over 25 intramural sports teams covering everything from volleyball to basketball to ultimate frisbee.
