Going to college is one of the largest investments you can make for your future. So this decision should not be taken lightly. But choosing to go to a reputable university (for example, JMU) doesn’t mean you have to be burdened with debt for the foreseeable future. There are many scholarships available to help ease the financial strain of going to college. JMU offers several for incoming freshmen, so if you’re approaching your first year of college, take a look at these JMU scholarships to see if one could be a good fit for you!
The Dingledine-Bluestone Scholarship “recognizes and encourages JMU students with a demonstrated vision to impact others.” All JMU Honors College freshmen are eligible to apply. The scholarship is equivalent to in-state tuition and fees for four years (roughly $13,000 per year, though it may change depending on annual tuition costs.)
The Madison Awards for Academic Excellence “are merit-based awards which recognize a broad spectrum of accomplishment and potential.” Individuals receive selection by academic colleges and departments that showcase academic achievement and potential to the university. The scholarship awards amounts equal to 75% of in-state tuition based on the year you enter JMU. The best part? You don’t even have to fill out a separate application! Your general JMU application automatically goes into the pot.
The Centennial Scholars Program is a competitive scholarship that offers financial support to first-generation Pell Grant-eligible students from the Commonwealth of Virginia. Centennials, or those accepted into CSP, are awarded a combination of federal, state, and institutional grants that cover the cost of in-state tuition, mandatory fees, housing, and meals.
The CoB Fifty to Infinity Scholarship Endowment was established in celebration of the College of Business’ 50th anniversary. Incoming freshmen with declared majors within the College of Business are eligible to receive one of five $10,000 scholarships. The scholarships are renewable for three years as long as the student remains in the College of Business and is in good academic standing.
JMU offers two STEM-based scholarships for students entering fields in the domain of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The Second Century Scholarship is a highly competitive four-year award that offers 100% of in-state tuition and fees. The Jones Scholarship is eligible for first-generation college students majoring in STEM who are also Virginia residents.
The new CSM J(ste)MU Scholarship program funds 22 students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in programs in the College of Science and Mathematics. Winners will receive up to $10,000 per year for four years in addition to access to special seminars, a mentorship network, scaffolded research opportunities, and more. Applicants must also be Pell Grant-eligible.
The Campus Teaching Fellows program provides assistance to first-year, in-state Virginia residents who attended high school in one of the program’s partnering school districts (Harrisonburg City, Rockingham County, Frederick County, Warren County, Petersburg, Virginia Beach City, Page County or Portsmouth City Schools). Applicants must plan to major in elementary education, early childhood education, or special education.
