There’s no doubt about it: college is an academically rigorous experience. When you choose to attend an institution like James Madison University, a school recognized for its academic excellence, the stakes can be even higher. While high school AP courses and even dual enrollment can give you a taste of what it’s like to study at a college level, when you add in things like campus living, social exploration, and self-accountability, maintaining a good GPA can certainly be a challenge. Luckily, JMU offers students a variety of resources like tutoring and Learning Centers to provide out-of-class assistance! If you’re in need of one-on-one learning or a little extra review, check out these options for JMU tutoring

About JMU Tutoring

James Madison first began offering tutoring services in 1974, but it wasn’t until 2005 that the Learning Resource Centers (LRC) were established. Umbrellaed beneath the Student Success Programs, the LRC consolidated academic supports like tutoring and disability services to aid students in need of academic assistance. The LRC is supported by both Academic and Student Affairs.

Several years later, in 2009, The Learning Centers became their own academic department, including five individual programs. The Communication Center, Multilingual Student Services, Peer-Assisted Study Sessions, the Math & Science Learning Center, and the University Writing Center. All five JMU tutoring programs moved into a renovated facility in the Student Success Center back in 2014 and can still be found there today!

Services

In 2023, the Learning Center supports students in person as well as online. Choose from one-on-one tutoring, consultations, or study sessions, and access their online resources, videos, and tutorials for additional support! Trained faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students provide their free tutoring. All of whom love to help you take your learning to the next level.

Each Learning Center offers tutoring that is specific to the disciplines and missions of their subjects. As an example, as per JMU’s tutoring website, “the Science & Math Learning Center provides walk-in, “café style” tutoring to support specific, introductory STEM classes, while the Communication and Writing Centers deliver mostly pre-scheduled individual and group consultations to students in any subject.”

Specialty

In addition to the tutoring and support provided by the Learning Centers, the JMU Advising and Support Center has compiled a list of tutors and tutoring hours by department. Some of their listings are individual tutors who are available for hire, while others are free tutoring sessions coordinated by professors within the department. You can find tutoring in subjects like Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Economics, Finance, and Math and Stats.
