For over a century, John Madison University has been a popular choice for students searching for a college that will give them a fulfilling experience both inside and outside of the classroom. While the Harrisonburg school started as a women’s college, it now serves as a center where every student can come and find something they love. If you’ve been considering the school and want to take it to the next level, I’d love to give you the ultimate guide on everything you need to know when visiting JMU.
While JMU offers virtual visits, viewing the campus firsthand gives you a better feel for it. The university offers tours for groups as well as for families and individuals. You can choose a self-guided visit or sign up for an information session and tour. The second option lasts for about two hours, and you can choose to view either the West or East Campus. Once you’re on school grounds, you can stay for as long as you’d like so you can really get to know the college.
If you’d like to stay as close to campus as possible during your visit, check out the Hotel Madison. The hotel is located right next door to the admissions office and is considered the official hotel of the school. If you’re a loyalty member trying to build up your points, you can find chains, including Hilton, Marriott, and Wyndham. You can also book a quaint bed and breakfast near downtown Harrisonburg to check out the area when you’re not visiting JMU.
To get to the campus, you’ll have several options. Charlotte Douglas International Airport has daily flights to and from the Shenandoah Valley Airport, putting you just minutes from the school. You can travel on land with the Virginia Breeze buses going from Southwest Virginia to DC or with regional transit options, including Amtrak, Coach Busses, or airport shuttles. The area also offers rideshare options from Uber and Lyft.
While you’ll definitely find national chain restaurants near JMU, Harrisonburg has a rich culinary scene with over 80 locally owned spots. You’ll find traditional American food, authentic BBQ, quiet cafes, boisterous bars and grills, and delicious health foods. The city has cuisine from nearly all ethnicities, including African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Italian, Mexican, and Chinese.
Harrisonburg has tons of activities to fit in around your stay. The city hosts several music festivals, including the Macrock Indie Music Showcase and the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival for folk. Twenty miles from the school, you’ll find a replica of Shakespeare’s London Theater, where you can catch a performance.
You can also view a JMU production at their Forbes Center. Nature lovers can hike in the George Washington National Forest, and city dwellers can spend time in the Arts and Cultural District.
At John Madison University, you’ll find an excellent school where you’ll feel right at home. By visiting JMU, you can feel confident before your time as a student begins.
