Having a baby can be one of the most exciting moments in your life – in a split second, everything changes. It can also be stressful, especially in the anticipation of what is to come. At Winchester Labor and Delivery unit, you’ll be surrounded by compassionate doctors, midwives, and nurses who are dedicated to making sure your birth experience is safe, comfortable, and meets as many of your birth goals as possible.
At Winchester Medical Labor & Delivery, you’ll have the benefit of being cared for by a team of highly qualified physicians, midwives, and nurses. All of them work together to ensure that you and your baby are comfortable and safe. With ten spacious and private birthing suites, you’ll be able to settle into your own space. Complete with a private bathroom! Each bathroom also comes equipped with a large shower with bench seating and a removable showerhead. These amenities come provided for your comfort throughout your labor. They provide a holistic solution for pain management. Additionally, birthing suites have dimming lights, a pull-out sofa for your support person, a television, and of course, Wi-fi.
When it comes to your birth experience, the Winchester Medical Labor & Delivery Team dedicates itself to helping you achieve your birth goals. If you prefer a natural birth, there are midwives to support and educate you throughout. They can help you explore different walking and positioning techniques, encourage relaxing, warm showers, and help you with deep breathing and mindfulness to practice natural pain management. Being in a hospital also means you’ll have access to medical pain management as well, including epidurals. Winchester’s childbirth classes help to explain the pros and cons of labor pain management. So you and your partner can make the decision that is best for you. Doulas and other family members are also welcome to support you throughout your labor and delivery.
Once your baby arrives, you transfer to their Mother/Baby department to rest, bond, and recover together. Lactation consultants are onsite to help and address any of your breastfeeding or bottle-feeding questions or concerns. Winchester Medical Center received four stars (out of five) from the Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation Program. Additionally, they love to supporting you on your breastfeeding journey! They provide a variety of breastfeeding resources, including information on local support groups, so you can find your community of other new parents on a similar journey to yours.
When it comes to bonding with your baby, Winchester Medical Center knows that there is nothing like uninterrupted time together after labor and delivery. That’s why they practice Rooming-In, an evidence-based practice in which babies stay in the room with their mothers throughout their hospital stay. From the moment they are born until they go home. They also believe in the importance of the “power hour,” or the first hour after your baby’s birth, which features mother-baby skin-to-skin contact that promotes benefits like increasing oxygen levels, providing warmth to the baby, pain, and stress relief, and better milk production.
Plus, according to Winchester Medical Center’s website, “When babies are held skin-to-skin, important bonding hormones are released. Infant senses are activated by being held close to mom in the first hour, and their sense of smell, taste, sight, and hearing all come to life, just by being held skin-to-skin.” No rows of bassinets in a nursery here – instead, you’ll gain confidence in your ability to care for your baby throughout your stay at Winchester, surrounded by supportive nurses, lactation consultants, and more.
