As a mom of young children, you probably spend a good chunk of your day trying to entertain your kids. It’s easy enough to hold their attention with screens and toys. But sometimes, it’s nice to get them out of the house and into an environment where they are learning and flexing newfound creative muscles. This is where EMU Musikgarten comes in.
If music draws your child in, then Eastern Mennonite University’s (EMU) Musikgarten offers opportunities to interact with songs and instruments! Get your little one moving and grooving with a Musikgarten class! They will begin to develop harmonious skills they will take with them for the rest of their lives.
Musikgarten comes from part of the Shenandoah Valley Preparatory Music (SVPM), a program of EMU created in 1988. SVPM is dedicated to “providing the highest quality music education to all students in the Central Shenandoah Valley. Regardless of age, ability, race, gender, financial circumstances, or ethnic origin through private and/or group instruction in a variety of musical areas, as well as through performance settings.”
One area of SVPM is their Musikgarten, a subprogram dedicated to musical outreach with children ages infant to 5. Their classes are taught by instructors Lindsay Lam, a professional bass player, and Hannah Schultz, a talented bilingual pianist. Hannah uses music and Spanish to connect with her community.
EMU Musikgarten currently offers several preschool classes. Including “Music for Babies” (ages 0 – 3 years), which introduces babies to musical concepts such as steady beat, melody, and movement. “Singing in God’s World” (ages 3 – 5 years) encourages children to sing, dance, and play instruments while raising their voices to praise God. “Music for Toddlers” (ages 2 years – 5 years) has little ones exploring their voices and expanding musicality through world music and nursery rhymes with fun props like scarves, hoops, and bells!
Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver. Even though the classes are designed for small children, the adults will be moving and grooving along, too!
EMU’s Musikgarten firmly believes music is “a vital link for all future learning.” They know the benefits of their music classes reach far beyond in-the-moment entertainment. According to their website, “EMU’s preschool music program provides opportunities for children to build confidence in musical expression and lays a foundation for future music learning. Through a combination of songs, movement games, instruments, storytelling, and listening, children experience a wonderful musical experience.” For their instructors, providing young people access to music is vitally important. It sets them up for a lifetime of success and appreciation of the arts.
