Midwives offer women support and care through pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum. They help women stay healthy during pregnancy and address complications as they arise, with as little intervention as possible. Midwives provide care throughout the pregnancy journey, all the way through postpartum healing. At UVA Midwifery in Virginia, a team of skilled UVA midwives empowers women to have positive birth outcomes with as little intervention as possible.

The mission of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UVA is to provide excellence, innovation, and superior quality in the medical care of patients, sharing knowledge in women’s health. The Department has a long history of success with teamwork, collaboration, and mutual support among providers, giving patients access to state-of-the-art facilities and technology.
This practice offers high-quality, patient-centered care for normal pregnancies and an array of other gynecologic conditions at several locations. UVA Midwifery provides a number of services for women throughout pregnancy and childbirth, as well as primary care for all stages of life.
UVA Midwifery supports and empowers women to choose their own care plans during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. At UVA Midwifery, women can plan to have a natural birth with the knowledge that medical care, if needed, is close by and available at all times.
UVA Midwifery’s board-certified nurse midwives provide unique, nurturing, hands-on care during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum. Midwives also develop trusting relationships with mothers and their families. This results in positive birth outcomes and confident, supported labors and deliveries.
Midwives encourage shared decision-making so that moms can feel informed and empowered to make their own health decisions for themselves, their babies, and their families. At UVA Midwifery, the team delivers individualized care that addresses each mother’s mental, emotional, physical, and social needs.
Midwives also provide care for women during the postpartum healing period, providing care and support in the weeks and months following childbirth. As mothers adjust to having a new baby in the home, midwives offer support, education, and help as the family dynamic changes.
UVA Midwifery offers standard pain management methods during labor, including:
The skilled team of midwives can also use low-intervention techniques to relieve pain, such as essential oils, calming music, hydrotherapy, and massage.
The practice also offers technologically advanced care for high-risk pregnancies through:
The UVA midwives provide an extra layer of support to women as they navigate pregnancy and postpartum. From education to medical care to support during labor and delivery, midwives are an excellent addition to a woman’s care team. At UVA Midwifery, midwives support the entire family, not just the patient. This high level of care makes them an excellent resource for women as they navigate their journey to parenthood.
